Have You Set Up Your Sleep Environment for Success? 😴

Success meaning the best possible opportunity for good-quality sleep and sufficient sleep duration.

It isn't difficult.

It's really important.

If you haven't put these six things in place and you're not enjoying good, consistent sleep, start here.

They don't guarantee good sleep, but the absence of these basics can make getting sufficient, quality sleep more difficult.

Prefer to watch and listen rather than read?

1. Full Darkness 🌑

Make your bedroom as dark as possible.

That means blackout curtains or blinds, and no light-emitting devices in the bedroom.

Alternatively, use a comfortable eye mask.

Light exposure at night can interfere with your body's circadian rhythms, so reducing unnecessary light is a simple, practical step towards creating a more sleep-friendly environment.

2. Silence, or as Quiet as Possible 🤫

External noise can disrupt sleep, even if you don't fully wake up.

If you live near a road, have noisy neighbours or share a bed with someone who snores, soft foam earplugs may help.

There is a trick to getting earplugs to work well. Go for the Honeywell or 'Howard Leight" Laser Lite Bell Shaped soft foam earplugs.

Then to get a nice, comfortable insertion so that the earplugs will stay put, wet your fingers, then roll the earplug in between them and then insert the compressed earplug into your ear. The lubrication will enable the earplug to insert nicely & stay put.

3. Clean, Fresh Air 🌿

Think about ventilation and airflow in your bedroom.

Opening a window, where practical and appropriate, can help refresh indoor air. Indoor air quality also depends on what's happening inside your home and the quality of the air outside.

An air purifier may be worth considering if indoor air pollution is a concern, particularly if you live in an urban area or close to busy roads.

Indoor plants can look great, but don't rely on them to meaningfully purify the air in a typical bedroom.

4. A Cool Temperature 🌡️

Your body undergoes changes in temperature as part of the process of falling asleep and maintaining sleep.

A bedroom that feels too warm can make it harder to sleep comfortably.

The ideal temperature is personal, and your preference may not match your partner's.

Possible solutions include adjusting bedding, using separate duvets or, in some cases, sleeping separately.

Another option is a dual-zone, actively cooled mattress topper. For example, in the UK the Pulsio Thermasleep.

The aim is simple: find a temperature that helps you stay comfortable throughout the night.

5. No Devices 📲

Keep phones, tablets and other unnecessary devices out of the bedroom.

The bedroom should be a place associated with sleep, rather than work, scrolling or endless notifications.

Screens can also expose you to light and stimulating content when you should be winding down.

The bedroom is for sleep.

Sex, if you absolutely have to. But that's it. 😉

6. A High-Quality Mattress 🛏️

Your mattress should help you stay comfortable, supported and cool enough to sleep well.

The right choice depends on your body, sleeping position and personal preferences. There is no single mattress type that is best for everyone.

Which mattress should you choose?

I find latex mattresses are a great choice for many people. They can offer some of the pressure relief associated with memory foam, while generally allowing better airflow and heat dissipation than traditional memory foam.

However, comfort and temperature regulation vary between products, so try before you buy where possible.

When should you replace your mattress?

A mattress may need replacing after around 6–10 years, although its condition, quality and usage matter more than its age alone.

A good mattress topper may improve comfort and help extend the useful life of a mattress that is still in reasonable condition.

Try before you buy

If you can, visit a mattress store and spend a decent amount of time lying on the options you're considering.

Take a book!

A quick five-minute test isn't necessarily going to tell you how a mattress will feel after several hours of sleep.

Alternatively, some mattress manufacturers offer 90-day trial periods or money-back guarantees. Check the terms carefully before buying.

Which Part of Your Sleep Environment Could You Improve?

You don't necessarily need an expensive mattress or the latest sleep technology to make a difference.

Start with the basics: darkness, quiet, fresh air, a comfortable temperature, fewer devices and a supportive mattress.

These changes won't solve every sleep problem, but they can help create the conditions for better sleep.

Which of these six changes could YOU make to improve your sleep environment? 🤔
