Gut Microbiome Testing. What Value? Be Wary

Gut Microbiome Testing.

Direct to Consumer Gut Microbiome Testing, Why?

Have you tested your gut microbiome?

Did you get clear, actionable insight value from it?

Gut microbiome testing has become widely available and heavily promoted, with lots of promises.

But two major scientific papers suggest we should pause before buying costly tests.

Are Gut Microbiome Testing Results Reliable?

A 2026 study tested something very simple.

Researchers took one carefully mixed stool sample and sent identical portions to seven popular direct to consumer microbiome testing companies.

Three kits per company, twenty-one tests in total.

They also analysed the same sample using gold-standard laboratory methods.

Because the biological material was identical differences must come from the testing methods themselves.

The findings were striking.

Results differed between companies almost as much as they do between different people.

Why?

Because almost every step varies between providers:

👉 Sampling tools

👉 Preservatives

👉 Shipping conditions

👉 DNA extraction methods

👉 Sequencing technology

👉 Bioinformatics pipelines

👉 Reference databases

Is Gut Microbiome Testing useful for therapy and interventions?

The second paper, linked in comments, is an international consensus statement on microbiome testing in clinical practice. It has a clear headline.

"Routine clinical use is not yet supported by evidence"

Key reasons include:

👉 No agreed definition of a “healthy microbiome”

👉 “Dysbiosis scores” are still research tools, not clinical diagnostics

👉 Test results should not drive treatment decisions on their own

Do you need testing to improve your gut microbiome?

I use functional testing within my work with clients, and in doing so differentiate between what is scientifically interesting an what is clinically actionable.

I also often support clients to improve their gut microbiome, using simple interventions like these, with no testing needed most of the time.

✅ Fermented foods

✅ Phytonutrients emphasis

✅ Dietary fibre diversity

✅ Targeted probiotics for specific conditions

✅ Sleep, stress-reduction, exercise and circadian rhythm alignment

✅ Reducing ultra-processed foods

There are also companies offering practitioner only testing, including markers for pathogens, parasites, fungi, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and where indicated, those can give clinical, actionable insight.

Have you used a gut microbiome test?

Have you been tempted?

Will this change your thinking?
