Decaf Coffee Benefits

Is Decaf Coffee Delicious and Good for You? ☕🤔
Yes, it can be delicious.
Yes, it can be very good for you, too.
Let's start with the taste.
If you haven't experienced delicious decaf, you may simply not have caught up yet.
With the development of methods such as Swiss Water and supercritical CO₂ decaffeination, which can remove caffeine while preserving much of the coffee's flavour, roasters have increasingly been able to source high-quality beans and roast them with skill to produce genuinely great-tasting decaf.
In the past, decaf often had a poor reputation for flavour. Quality beans and careful roasting weren't always prioritised, and the resulting coffee could be disappointing.
Thankfully, things have changed.
In the UK, many artisan roasters now offer decaf beans. To make it simple, I'd suggest trying the roasts from Decadently Decaf. IDecaf is all they do, and they're very good at it.
What Are the Potential Decaf Coffee Benefits? 🔬
So, decaf can taste great. But is it healthy?
Probably yes, for many people.
Coffee contains polyphenols and other bioactive compounds that can influence the gut microbiome.
Changes in gut microbial activity may, in turn, have implications for immune function, mood and cognition.
Significantly, many of these compounds remain in decaffeinated coffee.
A recent human trial published in Nature Communications, which I'll link to in the comments, provides some interesting additional evidence.
Habitual coffee intake shapes the gut microbiome and modifies host physiology and cognition
What did the trial involve?
The study involved 62 healthy adults who went through three phases:
Initial comparison: habitual coffee drinkers were compared with non-drinkers.
Coffee abstinence: participants abstained from coffee for two weeks.
Coffee reintroduction: participants were given either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee.
The study was double-blinded, meaning participants did not know which type of coffee they were drinking during the intervention.
What did the researchers find?
When coffee was introduced or reintroduced, the researchers observed meaningful changes in the gut microbiome.
And this happened with both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee.
Then came the really interesting part! 🥸
Caffeinated coffee: Participants receiving caffeine reported a reduction in anxiety and distress, alongside improvements in attention.
Decaffeinated coffee: Participants receiving decaf performed better on two tests of memory recall.
These findings are intriguing because they suggest that coffee's potential effects aren't solely down to caffeine.
So there are decaf coffee benefits too.
However, this was a small study, and the results need to be interpreted cautiously. We shouldn't assume that the findings prove coffee will improve memory, reduce anxiety or produce the same effects in everyone.
The real headline for me is that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can influence the gut microbiome, with potentially interesting effects beyond caffeine itself.
So, Is Decaf Coffee Healthy? ☕
For many people, yes.
Coffee can be a source of beneficial bioactive compounds, and choosing decaf allows you to enjoy much of the coffee experience while substantially reducing your caffeine intake.
That can be particularly useful if caffeine affects your:
Sleep: Caffeine can interfere with falling asleep and sleep quality, particularly when consumed later in the day.
Anxiety or feelings of stress: Some people are more sensitive to caffeine's stimulating effects than others.
Reflux symptoms: Coffee can trigger symptoms in some individuals, although switching to decaf doesn't guarantee relief.
Caffeine dependence: Decaf can help reduce caffeine consumption while preserving the ritual and enjoyment of drinking coffee.
Of course, decaf isn't completely caffeine-free. The amount remaining depends on the coffee and decaffeination process.
And if you enjoy regular coffee without experiencing problems, there is no automatic reason to switch.
But if caffeine is working against your sleep or wellbeing, moderating your intake or switching some or all of your coffee to decaf may allow you to keep the pleasure while reducing the downsides.
