Could Dark Chocolate Reduce Your Blood Pressure? 🐣🍫🤞

There are many potential benefits linked to cocoa consumption.


One of those is a possible blood pressure lowering effect, and there are several plausible biological mechanisms that may explain why.


Dark Chocolate Blood Pressure Effects and Cardiovascular Health


Cocoa and Nitric Oxide Production

Cocoa appears to stimulate production of Nitric Oxide (NO), which helps blood vessels dilate more effectively. This widening of blood vessels may naturally support lower blood pressure.


Cocoa Antioxidants and Blood Vessel Function

Cocoa also contains powerful antioxidant compounds that may help protect blood vessels from oxidative stress. This can support flexibility and responsiveness within the cardiovascular system.


What Do Studies Say About Dark Chocolate Blood Pressure Benefits? 🤓

Some human randomised controlled trials have found modest blood pressure lowering effects from cocoa consumption.


However, there are important caveats. Many studies involve relatively small participant numbers, short durations, specially formulated cocoa products, or industry funding.


A recently published study provides a particularly interesting perspective because it followed more than 21,000 adults over a period of 3.4 years.


What Did the COSMOS Trial Find? 📉

Participants consumed a cocoa extract providing 500mg of cocoa flavanols daily.


They also received a supplement providing 80mg of epicatechin, one of the major phytonutrients found within cocoa.


After two years, participants with normal blood pressure, defined as a systolic blood pressure of 120 or below, appeared to experience modest reductions in blood pressure.


This matters because blood pressure has a major influence on cardiovascular health and long-term cardiovascular risk.


However, the same benefit was not observed in participants with elevated blood pressure, which is the group most likely to benefit clinically.


It is also important to highlight that this intervention did not involve chocolate eggs, standard chocolate bars, or even regular cocoa powder.


This was effectively a concentrated cocoa flavanol supplement.


So, Is Chocolate Healthy? 📊

Maybe.


Some studies suggest that any potential benefits may be more likely with high cocoa percentage dark chocolate, typically 80% cocoa or above. This is likely because added sugars and highly processed ingredients may offset some of cocoa’s positive effects.


However, chocolate does not need to be a “superfood” to provide value.


Sometimes it simply needs to replace something worse.


If you enjoy a couple of squares of quality dark chocolate as dessert instead of a large ultra processed dessert rich in sugar and refined flour, that may already be a meaningful improvement.


Practical Takeaways 🍫

Here is broadly what I personally do and often recommend to clients:


Consume high cocoa percentage chocolate regularly and genuinely enjoy it.


This works best when part of a nutrient dense dietary pattern rich in colourful wholefoods and phytonutrients.


Include dark chocolate within a lifestyle that embraces movement, exercise, stress management, and circadian health.


These fundamentals matter far more than any individual. food, even if there are dark chocolate blood pressure benefits.
